Cute in Japan.."Puppy" version ;)

This is Cocoa!! She is Ayaka's new puppy and she is one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen :)

Ayaka is maybe the best student in my School right now? Her Speaking, listening and School grammar are all very high level. She is doing really good and she has a great personality too :)

A member of next months "Top 10" confirming what I already knew.....she's GOOD!!

I "combined" a couple of games here.Or did I ??

Land on "Chance" and stick your hand in the Shark??? of Dreams/Doom and pull out a paper with some ridiculously hard speaking task and get $2 (game money, not School money which is not actually real money) get it?? Never mind!!
If you land on another square you take a "Big Town" card and you have to introduce that character or answer random rapid fire questions.

I have 5 major influences in my life and they all shaped a certain part of my character.

2)Lesane Crooks, Tupac Amaru Shakur, (2pac)
3)Michio Kaku
4)Robert Pirsig
5)Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson just lost his 4 year old daughter and I can't imagine what that must be like. My deepest condolences go out to him and his. Life has a way of spinnin' us. Brace yourself!!

Ooh-oo child, things are gonna be easier
Ooh-oo child, things'll be brighter

Some day, yeah
We'll put it together and we'll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter

(The Five Stairsteps)

Be Strong Mike and "Grip". Don't go gettin' crazy and doin somethin' dumb please.

It keeps getting harder!!

I like diaries with pictures because I have major A.D.H.D. :)
Nodoka is getting better so I'm very happy with her effort right now!!

They wanted their picture taken in the "Obama Chair" (that's what they call it)..and so it came to pass.
I just had a Moses moment??

Moving along...

This is getting REALLY hard to do but the effect it has in motivating the kids is immeasurable so, it continues, but not without a lot of stress, second guessing and head scratching along the way.
It might change based on the final classes of the month for some students.

If you miss 1 homework assignment or are absent during the month (among other rules) you are not able to make the list automatically so that thins out the bunch a bit but this is still way hard!!

Excellence!! and stuff :)

She is #1 in her grade and class overall and in every subject but 1, where she is #2 :) Her brother is so great that he is 1st year H.S. studying conversation with advanced adults and talking about stuff like "string theory". Now it looks like his little sister is going to be as good or even better!! They have great parents by the way. I have come to learn, that behind most good kids, stands a great parent or two :)
Congratulations to Tomoe for being GREAT!!!

I will knock down a wall I built over an old room that will now sub as the "Store". This stuff is growing like a vine, so, it needs it's own space now :)

I was teaching a J.H. student about "Plan B's" and thought of the irony. I went to School to be a Radiologist. While I was doing a turn in the "Emergency room" just observing as part of my credits I witnessed a little girl trying to be revived, unsuccessfully (she drowned in a family pool). I was in the room when the Mother was informed of her death, and the sounds the girls Mother made were ones I never want to hear again....a life altered that will never be the same and I witnessed it so that was my last day going after my "Plan A".

Always have a "Plan B". Smart people usually do.

I charge them $2 per month (fake money) to protect their money. I offer it and if anyone refuses (cheapskate without forethought), they will be stunned to realize how serious I am about it.

Teacher!! I lost $200 I had been saving for 2 months and I was going to buy ___ today!!

Let me see your Bank book, are you insured??

Sorry ____, your not insured so it's all gone. Welcome to life and the idea of preparing for the unexpected. If your Mom calls complaining I'm going to tell her "I don't speak Japanese, I'm busy, goodbye.

End of story.

Nu nu nu Next!!

Money Laundering in Japan ;)

I like to have fun with post titles because it's fun to watch the search terms that drive them here. This is probably not what they were looking for :) This site is obviously for my personal enjoyment, as any number of prospective students who have visited may have been totally confused and moved right along...!!!

WTF is this guy doing?? and don't even translate my stuff to Japanese cuz it looks even worse. Lotsa people "screw that pooch" (wonder what that translates to in Japanese)??

Do girls have a 'Shopping Gene" that boys don't possess?? Because the girls shop till they drop and the boys are holding their cash for some unforeseen event??
We spent 15 minutes exchanging money (money laundering) and then they just pocketed their loot?? There are no DSi's over the horizon boys!! I think they love to hold on to it because...even fake money feels good to the touch???

They gotta shop to launder the money!! I gotta explain the "cleaning" phase of the "laundering scheme" ;)

A "kind of" test

Today I gave them a VERY difficult test. The purpose though was for them to ask me the meaning of words they did not know.

"Excuse me Chris,
What does ______ mean?"

So this was a lesson wrapped in a test. They did just what i wanted which was use me as a walking dictionary. I think, no, I KNOW, they will have lots of time to study grammar in School. I'd like them to have the confidence to ask their local A.L.T or J.E.T a question whenever they have one.

Saki is one of my favorites :) She NEVER hesitates to ask anyone anything!!

Minami, a 4th grader and her diary.

Adult Student Setup

This is what a properly prepared adult students prep should look like. Diary, Mainichi topic w/opinion, notebook for new words, dictionary, (+).
Good Job!! (lot's of things to talk about in the conversation class)

This is a message to Adult students who act like kids:
If you want the most from a lesson please come prepared and do what I ask or go join another School!!
Do your damn H.W. and your diary or go fly a ___ing kite!!!

sometimes I wish this was a "Kids Only" School. They study, listen, remember and always do their H.W. unless they wanna get ripped by me. If the no tie, surf shorts with t-shirt didn't convince them I'm different from other teachers then my "reaction" the first time they fail to show pride and respect definitely does ;)
That only happens once :)

Kids have a clear sense of fairness even if they don't always display it themselves. So my style works good for them. They are simple to understand because their face usually matches their hearts (smile = happy) etc..

Compared with some adults it's as refreshing as a cool breeze on a hot summers day!!

Tuesday = Boys day

It's not that I don't trust em'. It's just that a single table reaches it's natural limit when it comes to giving tests.
No sense in creating an overly tempting chance at going the easy way.

I got ALL boys on Tuesday? It's weird how the "changing season" in Japan can flip your schedule beyond all recognition. (FUBAR) without the F.U. ;)

Saturday Omiyagi

I got a Golden Week "Omiyagi/Souvenir" from Chikako. She always gives me presents when she returns from her family trips!!
I'm very happy!!!
Thanks Chikako!!

They got stuck on a tough word so they busted out the dictionary and found it in seconds!! I played a dictionary game with them way back, and they got very comfortable using their dictionaries. It now pays off big time as they never hesitate to grab it and make themselves understood.

Invisible Ink Pen.!!

The "invisible ink" pen has come a long way since I was a kid. Very cool indeed!!

She kept her balance for 60 seconds while answering my questions. (Part of a task connected to a Monopoly like game) She did it and got $3. Next level is one leg, touching your nose and pulling your ear while asking more difficult questions. They get stressed and tired but they beg to play this game and it's all in English...of course :)

The Next Step...

Is to make them keep their own "Bank Books". Now I can hold the money and they can deposit/withdraw or they can hold the money and book. I recommend they get insurance for $2 per month in case they lose all their "cash". I have no connection to the Madoff scandal so they can rest assured...their "fake money" is safe at my bank ;)

That "Baby Elmo" pillow is going for $310.00 I'll negotiate that price a little but only a little ;)

Saturday Gaming & Shopping

Chikako was absent for a while but she has caught up fast!! She is very very smart!! She did her first "Shopping" today!! She got a cute pencil/pen pouch. It is the most popular item for the girls right now.

Out of the picture to the right...
A girl is "speed spelling" and she was not a happy camper. MISS!!!
But she achieved the next goal so all was well in the end :)
Saturday is still my favorite day to teach.

The "Top 10" for May 09

The "Sisters" keep #1 and #2 but there has been some chart movement ;)
Good job kids!!!

Where is the love?? There are 27 in 60 seconds for Ayaka so she can "Pass and Go" and collect $3!! Not the class money but the game money. Lotta money going on around here ;)
