Fun with Rebus :)

Had fun using "Rebus" in my Friday J.H./Elem class today. Today was the rare easy class for them. I will be going home to Hawaii for a couple weeks so we are "cruisin" a bit. We did the usual conversation but did not get into anything new. I found a rebus generator and they had a lot of fun with it.

Doh!!!!!

Today I made a dumb mistake :( The School is in one house which is next to the other house which I live in. I made a secret "Batman Door" by knocking a wall out so I could make life a little easier. Today I left it open and they caught a glimpse of one of my new Haunted House props. Dooooh!!!!

In the dark with a haunting blue light under it and screaming in the background should render it effective again. I have tons of other stuff but still....lesson learned. Keep the damned door shut teacher!!!! ;)

Best D.o.t.W !!!

My Saturday kids absolutely Rock!!! They are so smart and everything I teach them they get on the first try.

gotta buncha stuff for the Halloween party today...thanks to Tim from Tabuse!!!

The Halloween party is going to be so sick!!! So filthy scary it almost gives me pause. Then....I get back to planning how I am going to traumatize the kids.....it's my job....it's what I do!!!

Friday Elem/J.H.

This class is all about question asking and answering. They are slowly starting to build more and more complex questions with follow-up. Kanuka moved up a level (to another class) so now Ayaka is the class leader and she is doing a great job.

Diving into Diaries

Today they brought me their first diary H.W. assignments. I predict that in one year they will be re-writing the "Declaration of Independence"

O.K., maybe not, but they will have done enough English writing to fill 6 notebooks. And since it's H.W. we don't need to waste any class speaking time. The top pic is of their "Word/Phrase of the week" notebook.

Yanai Junior High Sports Festival

Just a few pictures from Yesterday's Yanai Junior High School's Sports Day Festival. These events are a yearly tradition at schools all across Japan at this time of year.

Saeko's family took care of me yesterday with drinks and food. Thank you!!! :)

Game Time D.I.Y

I made this game about 3 years ago and I can put anything in the little spaces to match whatever lesson I am teaching at the time. The kids love it and it creates a lot of English speaking opportunities. It is getting a bit ragged though. It may be time to get creative again :)

One of the cutest diaries in my School. Good job Chinami!!!

Hot Seat V2

The J.H. girls are back in the "Chair" ;)

It is a good way to get them asking questions. I want my students to be the one's starting conversations by question or comment. If they can guide and control a conversation, they will be more confident and it will show clearly.

No sense in stressing about what question might be coming and whether or not you can answer it. Take control of the conversation with initiative and attitude and master your enviroment. I can teach till my head explodes, but if they have no guts it's a waste of everyones time. If you study with me I expect you to use what I teach you.

The last ones in.

Today my youngest class started their English Diaries ( now every class in my school is doing English diaries as homework). I will teach them some short phrases each week to use in their diaries, until they build a large enough vocabulary to explain most any event or action in a young kids life on their own, or with a little help from a dictionary of course ;).

They have been waiting to get started so I am happy for them.

September Top 10

This list is identical to August, since August is such a non event, teaching wise anyway. I imagine this is a year on year trend that will continue. I had a private class with one of my 14 year-old girls because the other 2 were preparing for their "Sports Festival". I was pleased to discover she can handle 60 minutes of complex conversation all by herself.

A private lesson might be a good idea for her.

(I am trying to get that tag cloud working correctly so give it time. To be honest, Amanda Fazani at Blogger Buster is doing ALL the work :) Her site can be found here)
