3pm Kids

These kids are great!! We are moving into a time where more and more of the class will be spent preparing them for Eiken 4 in October. After that we will return to straight "Eikaiwa". This is becoming a annual thing at my School. I want them to challenge that test once a year.

Saturday morning girls

My Saturday girls (morning version), are doing great!! Their diaries are good and their reading is "acceptable". 2 of the 5 members need to step it up, but I'm sure with a little prodding they will be just fine :)

My next Prez...Please!!

I am a Reagan Republican which means I am very unhappy with my party. I am now an Independent who will vote for Barrack Obama in November. Sorry Mcain !! "Old School" is cool...but not in politics...not now.

Time for diaries :)

Nodoka was absent today so my plan of giving them their first Diary as a H.W assignment had to be delayed till next week :(

I am sooo glad vacations are coming to a close so some serious teaching can resume!!

Saturday Vx

The Saturday kids are among the best in my school. Several of the Elementary students are studying for the Eiken 4 right now. Their diaries are great and the 4pm class is a straight "Eikaiwa" lesson with nothing but talking goin' on.

The Halloween party plans are starting and please remember this will be a scary event. All attendees should consider that if they are bringing young children who are not members of the school (my students know what to expect...they think so anyway ;) ), it may be too frightening. Also this is a COSTUME PARTY!! if you do not wear a costume you may not join and that applies to adults as well.

Improvisation

Today 2 students from other classes joined this class because of schedule conflicts. The conversation plan was tossed in favor of a "verbal scavenger hunt" game which was won by Kanuka and Hana :)

I think one of the greatest skills to have as a teacher, is being able to move from plan A to plan B so smoothly that no one even realizes the switch. Anyone who has ever mistakenly tried to force feed a bad idea/lesson knows what I'm saying. If your smart you only make that mistake once.

Back in the Saddle

It's just about time to get back into some serious teaching. Just about...

I have moved a lot of students into different classes over the summer to get the most out of the students, and I am happy so far with the results. I have lost a few students who could not change their schedules. That sucks but it's part of the game.

By the way...
These girls are as smart as they are cute!! They will be starting English diaries from next week :)

Early Halloween Shopping :)

Last year was the massive strobe light and this years addition to the Haunted House will be this little beauty :)

I advise anyone in Japan who needs Halloween gear of any kind go to "Moon Costumes" which you can find right here

The place has everything and they deliver promptly. My Haunted House just got a little better!!!

You tell me :)

I realized last Saturday, that my J.H. (advanced) students are at a high enough level to give me oral book reports. I will keep doing Mainichi based homework assignments as a vocabulary catcher but only 1 time a month. The other 3 classes will be one student bringing in a book that they really enjoyed (Japanese preferably) and introducing it to me. This is fun for them and will help build their conversation skills since, of course, this is all being done in English :) They can enjoy introducing me to books, writers, characters that they enjoy or were inspired by.
The other students will have to ask their questions about the book in English.

Japanese kids love reading so this seems to be a "no-brainer". Why not let them bring that joy into the English classroom. Anything that gets them talking in English is a good idea.

Saturday Cruisin'

My best non-adult student (14yr old) actually...better than most adults too :)
Explaining the story behind the book she is reading. It gave me an idea for my advanced J.H. classes.

Chiharu (1st yr J.H.) and Chinami (6th year Elem) are in a battle for who has the cutest diary. I think it's too close to call ;)

High Energy :)

These girls have enough energy to power 3 or 4 classes!!!! Ayaka is the new leader now that Kanuka has moved up a level. Chiharu has moved up to this class from another class so this group is just starting to gel :) I'm sure once they settle in it will be a very good class. They bring the energy so now I have to make sure I give them challenging lessons. That will not be a problem.

A diary entry from Chiharu :) Her friend apparently has a 30 story house!! ;)

Thursday Girls (Kids)

These girls are great!! Their reading level is amazing and their attitudes are perfect. We will be starting diaries in September. The girl in the middle will be ichi-nensei next year so she is literally YEARS ahead of her peers!! Some of her Kindegarten classmates have tried to join my school but none have been able to get in because they are...well...too young, which is fine because they act their age but that is too soon for my school. Yu on the other hand is simply amazing!!

The Top 10!!

The Top 10 for August 2008. There are a lot of new names. If a student misses 2 out of 5 classes they are auto-off the list. This holiday season brings a lot of that so those kids are off the list. I recommend all teachers who have the freedom to rank students to do so. It has worked great as a motivator and sets a clear tone for my School.

P.S.

Yamaguchi prefecture is melting!!!!!

Air conditioner = Happy :)

Boy do I miss Hawaii!!! We do NOT have weather like this, unless we get some "Kona winds" which is pretty rare. I can live in the 808 with no A.C., but I would not be able to hack it over here without the A.C. The kids were tired today...because of the heat no doubt. I'll be happy when September/October rolls around so I can enjoy life a little more :)

A Big Shout out to Willis Haviland Carrier who apparently invented my favorite life support system!!!!
