Summer adjustments :)

I just switched a girl out of this class because she needs to challenge herself more. I am sure it will work itself out. I sense a slight lack of effort from a few of my best students. Best? Maybe yes, maybe no. They will get a "Quarterly adjustment". Imagine amongst yourselves what that means.

NOT Mama's little boys

Boys tend to have a tougher time at my school. As I have described before, Japanese mothers seem to be very protective of their sons, much more so than with their daughters. I am happy to say that this class has not a one :) I have blown my fuse (always for a well understood reason, otherwise it does nothing) and these guys are still here. They have made it through the first year and their reward is....it will NEVER be as tough as it was last year.

They know what I want. Some guts, a little common sense and some more guts. It is that simple. They are having more fun every week now. Not a mama's boy in sight!!!!!!

Cool Blogger Tool

Since this is the slow season (for teaching anyway) I thought I would share one of the coolest free tools I have come across that relates to blogging.

It's called "Crazy Egg" and it will show you who clicked where on your site and will do it in the form of a heatmap or confetti (pictured) or list of items clicked via a list (also pictured). You can test using any patterns you like based on a flat time period or certain number of visitors. I don't use advertising but if I did this would be ESSENTIAL in finding out how effective my placements are.

That is the end of my "off topic" post ;)

Club "Crazy"

I took a pic because...just looking at it makes me sweat :( I average about 15 minutes on it during this smothering type of heat. Any more and I would pass out. Unfortunately kids who are members of school sports clubs are not so lucky.

Many schools in Japan require kids to attend their club almost everyday during summer vacation. They seem to believe that idle time is the devils playground so just keep them busy ( this is how it was explained by teachers and PTA mothers to me)
Families cannot plan summer trips because the kids are too busy WTF#1!! The kids are so tired it affects their ability to study properly WTF#2!! Remember these are SCHOOL clubs. The place where kids are supposed to be educated WTF#3!!

One of my best students will be absent because as i type, she is in a hospital getting an I.V. drip. Yanai Junior High thinks running kids under the sun all day in 90+ weather is a good thing apparently?? So for bothering one of my best classes...Yanai Junior High gets the big F__ Y__!!!

I played Football (American), Baseball and Boxing for years!! And loved it!! But schools are for educating. NOT for babysitting kids because their parents can't be bothered. Juku's are the babysitters... no wait, my bad. That's where kids go to get the education they are not getting at the School/Clubville.

The Dog Days...:(

School is out...Summer has arrived...and that means that any serious teaching is paused until September. There is a strange irony/cosmic justice going on here.
I used to HATE studying and love vacations. Now I see vacations as an annoyance that gets in the way of my teaching program. Ooooh, if my teachers could see me now!!

So anyway...
yeah, I am pretty much spinning wheels here for a bit.

Next Up...HALLOWEEN!!!!

I know what your thinking...."Halloween?? already??" Well after this last party, I realized that time is an asset that should not be wasted. It gives me time to think through ideas that seem good at first, but over time prove to be not so good.

This extra time gives me chances to come up with ideas that will need lots of preparation time and still be doable. Last year was great and this year will be even better. The countdown begins.

1. The Haunted House will be twice the size and twice as scary as last year. The menu will be larger as well.

2. It will be a strict costume party. No costume = no party for you. Cheap and simple is fine but making no effort will be unacceptable!! There will be a prize given to the one with the best costume!!

Smart gift giving

One of the benefits of teaching, is the gift giving. I get lots of great gifts from great students!!! I am VERY lucky!! I can't take pictures of all of them but Mrs Mantani's annual "Steak Gift" always draws out the camera. There is an old saying that :
"The way to a man's heart is through his stomach." I must be "Old School" because I get a warm feeling inside every time I open a package and find marbled steak inside!!

Thank's Keiko, Yumie, Chikako, Chisa, Chiharu, Saeko, Kohei and everyone else who gave me a gift!!!

And let there be Popcorn!!!

Yumie gave me this today, for my birthday present (July 16th). This will be taking a trip to the party on Sunday. Soft Ice cream, Shave Ice, Cotton candy and Popcorn!!!
This is going to be more like a festival than a party!!! Thanks Yumie!!!!

EDIT: I tested out the popcorn maker. The kids explained the Japanese instructions and they were rewarded with popcorn.

Meanwhile...
as of today, 102 people have confirmed for the Hawaiian Summer Beach BBQ :)

English Conversation 101

The "Hot Seat" idea was another one of my keepers!! They have a blast taking over the class and firing questions at each other.

They got a little carried away though...

They started asking questions like "What do you think about the Japanese Agricultural Ministry" Seriously.... These are Elementary students!! I had to tell them to drop it a notch. They were goin at like it was "stump the classmate"!!! I'm happy with "What do you think about ____?" for now. It is all about opinion giving and confidence in expressing yourself!!

Kanuka joined Yuko and Saki's class and....
Amazing!!!! Amazing!!! Amazing!!! They spoke ALL English for the hour and it was some tough topics!!! I am VERY happy Kanuka changed her class. This J.H. class is one of the best in my school, and that includes the adult classes!!!

Chiharu got 47 out of 50 on her Eiken :) Next time I want 100% but 94% will do for now!! Good job Chiharu!!!

Single digits

This girl came by bike today (not a short distance). As a teacher it always feels good to know when a student is putting in a lot of effort (in this case, just to get to the class). It motivates me even more to make sure I am on my game and I'm "bringin' the goods"

The countdown to the "Hawaiian Beach BBQ" is now in the single digits. The pig has been secured and all systems are a go!! This party is going to be legendary!!!

Beach Badminton!!

I saw a father and daughter? playing badminton in their front yard yesterday ( without a net? The Japanese see no real need for a net for recreational playing??) I however, have never played without one. Anyway, I got the idea to set up a big beach badminton net and well...an idea was born...er...clipped;) I bought 4 rackets...with 4 more on the way. And I built my own 5 meter net. This should be a lot of fun at the beach party!!! :)
