Vocabulary Game FTW!

I played a simple vocabulary game and they went nuts!! Basically they each get 4 seconds to come up with a word from the chosen letter. We go around till there is only one player left. Teaching is always a cost/benefit weighing. How long does it take, and how much do they get out of it?. This game takes seconds to explain and they explore just how many words they really know., as well as learning new ones.

It's all about the 3 V's!!
Vocabulary,Vocabulary, Vocabulary!!!!!

Too Good!!!

These girls are just too good!!! While they are chatting away, I sometimes think to myself "Did I really do that?? Am I that good??" Then I quickly snap to my senses and remind myself...yes...I AM that good!!!!!

The girl in the top picture will probably become an interpretor or a translator. She is that damn good!!

T&C Surf Designs (Bike)

Someday this girl will be the best in my school. She must be bored to tears with whatever song and dance the local A.L.T is throwing at her. That's the price you pay for being a "Brainiac"!!!

In all my years in Hawaii, I never saw a T&C Surf Designs Bicycle before??? To be honest, I wasn't looking but...looks pretty chill :)

Asuka went to Nara/Kyoto/Osaka and gave me these for souvenirs :) Where I come from (Hawaii), throwing stars are illegal!!! Not in Japan...apparently ;)

The only time when I enjoy a class interruption is when they hit the diaries :)
I encourage them to hit that book early and often!!

The girl on the far left just got 1st position in her class. I ask questions in a clockwise direction so the best catches it first, and they have no chance to parrot another student who went before them. Yes...I rank my students as a whole school and in individual classes. It is another form of motivation and it ensures my best student starts it off right by getting it right :)

I think I will use these tickets for my Hawaiian Party? Boy, they have a generator for everything online!!

I found a hit from and then found myself on it!!! Anyone who is not familiar with this should check it out!! It is Flip-3d meets Google.

When I was 5 ...hmmmm?

Today I taught them the opposites of some common words they already know.

To start the class we do some "exercises"they have to cycle through Days, Months, 10-100 by ten's and now they have to give me the opposite of the words I say.

The youngest is 5 and she reads, writes and speaks at a J.H. level. They blow my mind sometimes!! If I complain and tell them they should be better than they already are...they get better!! The sky is the limit!! I was playing in the mud when I was 5 :( I don't even want to think about what I could do when I was 5? besides cry, get dirty and break something expensive :)

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y !!!

My Elementary class came in today and instantly started bombarding me with questions :)

What do you think about_____?

How was your week?

How was your day?

etc etc.

I just sat back and answered the best I could ;) They are really doing great and they understand now, that this is not a speaking school, it's a conversation school!! They showed a lot of initiative which makes this teacher very happy!!!

A NEW Co- #1

The girl on the left is 13? And she is (as of next month) a co-#1. The students are ranked on, among other things

1) English level compared with others of same age.

2) Quality of work. (In the classroom or at events)

3) Any and all assignments completed. OR an explanation in English if there is any problem.

4) Marked, and continued improvement.

5) Showing "Guts"! Demonstrated by starting or attempting to start a conversation however simple that conversation may be.

Any student of any age has a chance to be the best in my school. And it has spurred a highly competitive atmosphere which has helped everyone to improve. Other students or their parents felt it was too intense so they have departed for other schools. (Good luck ;) ).

Some parents have not even attempted to bring their child because they heard it was an elite school and they worried their kids could not study in this style (results oriented).
All in all the top 10 has helped me to filter out and discourage all but the most serious of studiers. I don't have a lot of those "strokes of genius" but the ones I have are real keepers!!!

So the girl on the left is OUTSTANDING!!! her English is great , her diary is perfect , her improvement over the last year is ....ridiculous!! I think she has wanted the top spot because she has "guts"!!! now she has it!!!! Congrats to an AMAZING year K_n_k_!!

Pardon the interuption ;)

I interrupt my normally scheduled post to bring you these 2 gems from America :)

I love my country!!!!! :)

Jon Stewart for president!!!!!!!!and Steven Colbert for V.P.!

Sold on "Old Maid" :)

This group is great!! Chiharu studies 2x a week and it is starting to show. She is the best student in both of her classes!! Honoka is excellent as well!!Hinano is improving. She will catch-up soon!! After the main lesson we have a very competitive game of "Old Maid" which is heavy on the reading and is one of my favorite games because they are constantly talking and reading.

These are the new cards we used today. (Containers/Amounts) Thanks goes to
and other free sites that share their materials with teachers like me!!!!

The Boys Club.

My School is about 85% Girls/Women 15% Boys.

This is one of 2 all boys classes and let me tell you...they have come-up hard!!! I have gone completely ballistic a number of times with this group (the other classes only needed to see "scary teacher" 1 time ;) ).

But, they are getting the hang of it now and they will be an outstanding class....soon :)

5% short of acceptable.

I had a student come in and tell me she got 95% on an English test at School. She seemed quite proud. My first response was: What happened to the other 5%?? She said she had made 2 careless mistakes. I knew that HAD to be the case since my lesson and her skill is far above her J.H. English course.

For a half a second I felt like I should praise her, but that thought quickly exited my mind. Some kids are self motivators while the rest of us need to be tied to the "whipping post" and be given clear instructions and a hard push to reach our full potential.

Welcome to the Whipping Post ;)

Who woulda thought "Old Maid" could be so fun?? They need to level up their reading, so the game is just an excuse to get more reading out of them :)

My week between posts was caused by an XP crash which pissed me off so bad I decided to give VISTA a shot! Well, so far, so good (fingers crossed, knock on Wood, yada yada yada..)

I also got lytebox running properly after tearing my hair out trying to install litebox.

Hot like Summer!!

Today was HOT!!

These are some of my "Holiday Troopers"!! 4 of todays 6 classes were canceled because of the Golden Week holiday. Why am I even working today? Because the kids who come here on days like this are the serious studiers that's why! I live to teach highly motivated students!!! This is my "bread and butter"!!

I had a great day and the students who came had some fun. I LOVE my job!!!! ( I know how blessed I am to be able to say that ;).

Diary Digging :)

I am a big believer that kids should have a Japanese/English, English/Japanese diary on the first day of English school. It is the key to breaking down the communication barrier and it motivates them to learn how to read. These girls have basically learned how to read using their dictionaries and at the same time gotten very comfortable using it.
