Is 8 the best year?

It seems to me that if you can get phonics finished by 7yrs old you set up the student to really excel rapidly when it comes to reading. Between the 8th and 9th birthday seems to be the time when the brain is most ready for intensive learning? It happens in my school again and again.

7yr old = Phonics, Vocabulary, simple form communication

8yr old = (Skip simple reading and go straight to High School level), Vocabulary, Diary, Complex communication.

9yr old and up = Adult beginner style lessons with the speed of the lesson adjusted to the class level.

After 4 years, this is what works for me. No text books in the classroom (used only as H.W.) if you have to use them. NO CD's!! because they waste valuable time and it can be done at home with the text.

Saturday F.T.W V5

This is probably the funnest class in my school. I am very hard on them sometimes but it is only because the have enormous potential that needs to be wrenched out sometimes. I would be an over-bearing parent living vicariously through my children if I had any......Thank God I don't!! Actually my unborn kids would be thanking God....er....nevermind.

T.G.I.F

The girls got their "game faces" on!! They all had the giggles for some reason tonight??

The answer was... "I passed gas in the car" no joke!!! I told her to find something from a "Diary Phrases" book and she settled on that one? :)

Ayaka reading her opinion about Internet "matchmaking" sites. They are effected by this topic and it was interesting to get their opinions in English.

Kohei decided to step it up a level on his own. "Click" the picture and look at the degree of difficulty between the entry on the left and the entry on the right. He is not on the top 10 but it looks like he will be. He decided to level-up on his own and that gets props from me!!!:)

8yr old Girls

A couple of pictures from today's 8yr olds girls class. Actually, one of the girls is 6. Their reading is 2nd/3rd year J.H. and their writing is...? I don't know? But, it's good enough to start diaries from next month. It will be difficult at the beginning but they will get the hang of it after a while. I can't believe how far they have come in just a year

Hachigamine Park

Well, I took a few of my students to a Japan America Society (?) event and we had a blast!!! I will be joining future events so my students can have more opportunities to mix and mingle with some fellow Americans.

Thursday Kids (Girls)

The reading and speaking is really good in this class. Their reading is YEARS ahead of their classmates. Their very high reading/writing level is going to help make the conversation lessons go much smoother. I pat myself on the back with this group. They are a "proof of concept" type class.

Diaries.....getting better :)

Chih__'s diary is much better than before. She still needs to improve more but I am happy with her progress. I think Diaries/Journals are a critical tool in the English teachers tool box. It is another way of breaking the communication barrier. I only wish I had started doing it sooner.

If you see a diary with errors it is because i only correct a little at a time. Too much red pen can make the student depressed and lose confidence. I am a hard core strict teacher but I don't do anything that makes my job harder.

Beach Block (X)

I am doing what I hate the most :( Making/laminating flashcards!!! I feel like some drone toiling away when I do this. I cannot imagine working in a factory or office doing the SAME thing EVERYDAY!!!!!! I would blow a fuse and go postal with a scope on the rooftop kinda thing ;)

anywayz...

I want to really enjoy some serious beach time this year...and since Yanai has a 3 month beach season (it's 2 but I add 1 for my head) I have to do this stuff NOW!!! It took the 4th year of my school to get the planning right but I'm on it.

By the way...

Morgan gave me the idea to have a Hawaiian style Pig roast. It's called "Kalua" pig and it's cooked in the ground ina underground oven called an "Imu".

I will do a full Hawaiian Summer Party preview soon.

EVERYBODYS WELCOME!!!! Hula show, Hawaiian Grinds, Ukelele, African Drum troupe (?) Magic show, Cotton Candy machine, Shave Ice machine.....erry thing!!!!!

Advanced J.H/Elem V2

Kan__, is 14 but she could sit in, and hang on, with my best adults (Eiken 1 Lvl). She is AMAZING!!
Everything she does, she does well. If I ask her to improve something...she does it on the next try and she does it perfect.

Her diary is one of the best. And the content is getting much more elaborate and filled with personal observations. She is a teachers dream!! A perfect student :)

Ha__, is 10 and she is great. Most kids her age are not anywhere near her level.

Ay___, is great and has a lot of talent as a speaker.

Advanced Elementary

Chinami definitely has the cutest diary!!!

Chinami also has the neatest notebook :)

Today's notebook entry which is a an outline of how I expect the class to play out.

Below is my souvenir (omiyage) from Chikako. I think she bought it in Okinawa?

I love it !!!!!! Very cool!! Thanks Chikako!!!!!!! :)

Kei moves up!!

For the first time in 10 months, Yuko has some company at the top spot!!! Kei is 14 and he has been here for 3.8 years. He is now an adult level student at Speaking/Reading and Writing!!! If you study hard this is what you can do!! Kei can do anything he wants! Interpreter, Translator, English teacher, anything that involves English. As long as he continues....the world is his oyster!!!

This is Yu and she is a pre-school (Kindergarten) student. Yeah, she is already reading and writing...and speaking at a MUCH higher level then kids her own age. She is a teachers dream!!

This is Kei's Diary. Lots of errors but he really took on a challenging topic which is what I want. Students who challenge themselves will always get my respect!!!

(I don't correct all mistakes at one time. If I did the amount of red ink would make them depressed and bother their confidence...little by little :) )

2007 in Pictures

I finally got around to doing this!! It only took 4 months to get to it!! 2007 was an excellent year and all the parties were fantastic. The Haunted House Halloween Party was the best and I will try to top it this year!!!
