Eiken Pefection

Well, I told them that failing was not an option. I said "You will not try, you WILL do!!". I said no one had failed an Eiken in 2 years and it was a streak I expected to continue. I told them that the first test is the most important because it sets a standard.

They were listening!

Not only did they all pass (Chiharu missed the test registration deadline so she did not get to participate) they all got good scores which was led by Hideaki and his PERFECT score!! This was their first chance to really show their focus, commitment and drive. I am a very happy teacher!! As a reward (besides the amazing feeling of accomplishment they feel inside), I think it's time for a winter cheeseburger party!!

P.S.
No we are not cutting pumpkins in January! It's a picture from 4 months ago.

Obama pwns Clinton!!

I have just decided that I want this man to be my country's next president. I am a Reagan child and am also a registered Republican in the state of Hawaii. But the lack of anyone outside McCain in the Republican field, and my doubts that a Republican can win the next election lead me to this choice.
wait...
That's not the whole story...
After watching Bill Clinton destroy what was left of his tattered legacy by showing once again that this is not about America but about the Clintons!! They will shred anyone in or out of their party that gets in their way. Their supporters made calls to voters claiming that Obama studied at a madrases and swore on a Koran. Both total bullsh__ but it was said none the less. The Clinton's hopefully have begun to be so blatant that they will now be scrutinized by voters in their own party which will bring nothing but pain for them. Good riddance!! (I pray).

Obama is the best candidate to come along in my generation (post Reagan) and thus I throw my considerable weight behind him. I expect a call from someone in the Obama camp within hours of this posting.

Obama for President!!

The Dictionary Game

This is a great game to get kids comfortable with using a dictionary. I say the word in Japanese and they have to race to find, and say, the English word for a point. 5pt gets a chocolate. They love this game and they learn the value of that book pretty quick. One student is 6 and another is 7 and they are reading good enough to win this game. The 7 year old is the best in her class at reading speaking and writing.
Any student over the age of six should be given a dictionary and told to get busy gettin' busy with it!!

This is how it starts!!

This class just got their marching orders. I told them what I want and how I want it. I went over a template of what I want, and the layout I expect. They will do it from now on and by themselves. I told the parents not to assist because if they do I can't see where the struggle is? It will start slow but, come summertime they will be years...YEARS ahead of their classmates in speaking and writing.

Wednesday Diaries (Looking good)

These kids have come a long way in the 3 months since we started these diaries. They are great students who make it fun to teach.

Diary Page #1

These guys just did their very first Diary/H.W. assignment and I am very happy! The one on top looks like a train wreck but he is 8 years old and his public school classmates are probably playing "fruit basket". His speaking and reading are at a 2nd year J.H. level and his writing will be too by summertime.

Oh yeah? Read this!!

This class is almost ready to be let loose on some adult level reading. Were getting "Dolch" with it right now and after that, it's time to....Level up!

A 2nd grade J.H. Diary

This girl has come a long way fast! Her speaking and writing are at an advanced level for a 13yr old. She will pass Eiken 2 in 2 weeks and she has a very bright future ahead of her!!

Chris's Miyazaki Chicken Salad

Every year for the past 5 years I have been dieting. From January to September I go on a no/low carb diet. So when the weather gets nicer, I can go to the beach with a nice body. And from October to December I can pig-out during the American holidays and gain about 8-10 Kilos.

After 14-21 days of strict no carbing I start to lose weight really really fast. So fast in fact, that the first time it happened it scared the s__t outta me because I couldn't stop losing weight!

I had a blood workup before the surgery on my nose last year (damaged from multiple breaks when I was a fighter) and my levels are the same as 10 years ago. (so the fact that I eat ALOT of meat has not had any effect on my cholesterol levels)

The picture is of a souvenir (the Miyazaki chicken) my student Natsumi gave me (thank you Natsumi 143). Apparently the Mayor is a cook on his days off? I gotta say it's the best chicken I have had in Japan!!
Anyway...

Throw your favorite meat on a salad and maybe some tofu on the side and watch the weight fly off.

Dentists "The bringers of pain"

I never actually drew the horror that occupies my mind but it's there....oooooh yes ...it's there alright! The whistling sound of that little drill, the smells, the bright light, the stink breath of the dentist making you gag. Wait maybe it was the plastic tube noisily slurping every last bit of moisture from your dry mouth which is now covered with a fine dust from your own drilled tooth....or maybe it's the fact that it always took more needles than the assistant said it would?

Me: Do I have to get a needle?

Cute Assistant: Don't worry honey, I'm sure it will be just one and you probably wont even feel it.

**I believed her, despite the fact that she ALWAYS said that, and she was ALWAYS wrong? seriously...WTF!! how about saying:

"Listen kid, you ask the same damn question every time your here? why? are you stupid or something? you know your getting 3 or 4 big needles in your mouth and the first one is REALLY gonna hurt. Now "man-up" and stop being such a little girl and deal with it"

I coulda swallowed that better than getting lied to by adults again......and again.

This simple little picture brought all that back and I now realize my terror is not mine but "ours".

Girls Up!

In one of the pics you can peep one of their notebooks, which has what we started today.

I'll ask something like "What have you been doing since yesterday? and they will respond in the form I gave them. As they improve, they can drop the form and go off on their own speaking spree. They are 8 and 9 years old, so they are way ahead of the game and I have no complaints whatsoever!

Nintendo D.S. The cool study tool!

This is one of my private students,
(she is also an excellent English teacher!)

Today she showed me her latest study tool....a Nintendo D.S. If this little beauty was around when I was a kid I might have studied a second language myself!

**cough**

O.K., that's a lie, but this comes as close to "English is Fun!!" as I have seen!
The future of paper text books is doomed!!

Japanese Soopa Juice!!

If your like me then you drink coffee like beer....TOO MUCH!! Being wired on coffee does not make for a good performance at anything, unless your in a "grinding teeth, while looking for the bathroom" competition.
So in the sea of power/health/energy drinks I have found the pearl! This winner not only gives you a good high but it makes me....happy...I have no f___ing idea why?
The next time you can't decide which one to grab, I say give this one a ride.

Dear Diary (Wed. Edition)

These diaries are a fountain of topics to discuss with these kids. It changes from week to week and it is all about them. Their diaries are O.K. but getting better. Their speaking is awesome! They are 2nd year J.H. but they could join any H.S. 3rd grade class and hang (speaking)...no sweat!!

P.S.
When the pics were taken they were not finished being corrected.

14 pages

That's it. 14 pages between them and their 1st big step (28 to be accurate the 14 viewed are my prep, and the next day, 1/13 they will go at it for real). By "them" I mean one of my Elementary classes. I have been telling them that not passing is not on the table. If you allow space to fail, you are already behind the 8 ball. If you have studied then you should pass. That's it! Manage your stress, control the fear and focus on a perfect score.

They will pass, I am their teacher, and they are smart. I'm expecting some very good scores.

Whos.amung.us firefox plugin

This thing ranks high for the "411" factor. Get the plugin for firefox then just glimpse the bottom of your browser to see how many people are peekin' your site at any moment in real time. A real keeper that will be with me from now on.

Dear Diary (4th and 5th Graders)

A couple diaries from my 10 year olds. They are getting better but I want more improvement and more questions about each others entries. I have been asking most of the questions and now I want them to start asking each other

Level Up (Sat. Girls)

As of today this class is moving a level-up! They will start writing all the questions I will be asking them and how I want them to start their answer. They are 8-9 years old and after about 2 months of this they will begin their English Diaries.
At that point the class will be a 100% conversation class built around their diary entries ( which of course is their weekly H.W.).

A Good Book 4 Adult Students

If your a teacher of adult students in Japan I highly recommend this book! I don't teach textbooks but I do prepare my own handouts and tests that focus on idioms/phrasal verbs. My classes are 95% conversation though, and I speak at a very
casual/street level.
The students can get the formal version in any number of textbooks, in any bookstore.
I have found myself explaining things like why a man calls a woman "Bitch" and can a woman say it to a man? and how did it start...etc.
As you can see by the pic, this book does not filter it's content. The students in my School will learn it all and they can choose to speak how they like. I am very much against censorship in almost all forms (except as it relates to children) and I was happy to find a book that doesn't take it upon itself to judge what is proper and what is not.

January 2008's Top 10!!

By luck the first pic of 2008 is related to one of the best ideas of 2007.

Some Background,
I'm a "poor sport". That's what they called me anyway, because I threw fits if we lost a Football/Baseball game. I once had a little league coach who had a son that played like a sloth on Valiums. He put his son in at a critical point of an important game so he could....? I honestly don't f__king know? Anyway we lost and I exploded.

While his son was woofin' down "Jim Dandies", I was practicing everyday.....everyday!! So while I was freaking out at High Rock Elementary School's baseball diamond, little did I know, I was learning a lifelong lesson!

Winners win (or not, then get pissed they failed and go at it again)
and losers have "enablers" (or over protective mothers),that tell them winning is not important....?..um...yeah...O.K....whatever. I thought that was crap then and I still do.

I consider every kids class like a little team, and when I see someone slacking or just not cutting it.....I get flashbacks, and I stomp it out very quickly. I won't have anyone bother other kids learning.
This Top 10 list has been a great way to show the best kids that I do see their effort and it has been an immense motivational tool! It seems appropriate as the first pic of the year.
