Why are girls better students??

I don't know the answer?
If I was a young boy studying Japanese it would NOT be at the top of my list. Baseball or American Football would be. I guess its the same over here?

The girls on the other hand seem to really really enjoy studying English. It is on the top of some of their lists. They want to travel and work and study abroad. Good for them. I'm more than happy to help make that happen. Maybe its just my school or town but these girls run rings around the boys!

And so.....the fallout.

Everyone is getting ready for the big push starting next week. I have totally revamped my adult schedule this week, and I am very happy because it means my schedule is crystal clear. I will lose a few adults (Oh nooooo!)not. But anyway. Yeah...

The week begins

Well another week begins. I`m looking forward to seeing full classes this week. The kids are all back from vacations so it`s time to get busy with the teachin'. September to January is the best time of the year for teaching. We got the "BIG 4" holidays coming and its great for expanding into the cultural part of their education.

The Halloween party this year is going to be awesome....AWESOME!!

( T.G.F.S ) Thank god for Saturday!!

I was having a very bad day before todays classes. Kid are very straight and to the point. ( Maybe that is because I'm not their parent). Anyway, I get worn out sometimes trying to understand adults and all the games that they play. You gotta cut your losses and move along. The kids energy and character were much needed and highly appreciated!

Chiharu did very good at her first try with a higher level class. I was happy to see that she will do just fine.

The Great purge of 2007

The girl who is in the middle picture just requested to take on a second class. She has decided that she wants to work/travel in the U.S. when she gets older.
This is why I love being a teacher. If you are a good teacher, you can help shape young lives!

***Happy teacher***

as for the purge....

I was going to wait until the end of the year to start dropping some adult classes. But I have already started it. No time like the present. I don't have the room in my schedule anymore to entertain casual studiers. They will catch on elsewhere. Good luck to them!!

Phonics....your swimmin' in it!!

This class is a new one and they are drowning in phonics. Studying at my school requires a student learn phonics completely and quickly. The faster they can use that dictionary the better. This is a conversation school and that (conversation) can't really happen on the level I want until the kids can open a dictionary and tell me "exactly" what it is they want to say.

It's a ...HEAT WAVE!!

This is usually a 28 student day. Today I had 7. Starting next week though the students are returning and regular classes will resume. I chill in Hawaii so I don't need this down time. I'm ready to start stressin' on some little minds and get them a level 3 black belt in English conversation.

Yeah Baby!! Woooo hooo!!

100+... Man I love this stuff!! I wish we could have a couple months of this. I enjoy the sun actually but the heat comes with it so..nothing you can do about that.
Today is laying out, hitting the bag, and a little school work. That is about it.
Discovered a new program on Sky-Perfect called "Dexter" about a serial-killer/super hero. Good show. anyway....time to layout.

School Holiday Post

Well since there are no classes during the holiday I will do a "review" post.

Bought a new Fujitsu laptop and love it. However...it came with VISTA and I am very disappointed with it. I already have XP with the paid version of windowblinds and VISTA 3-D desktop so my XP looks better than VISTA and it seems buggy, it seems like what it is....a publicly paid for beta-tester. It also has (un-editable) windows services which send data from your PC without your consent. I could turn those off in XP but not VISTA? Do I mind? In theory ..no but in principal yes. I paid for this thing so I should at-least have the right to tell it who it can and cannot talk to.

I recommend you wait on VISTA till an SP-1 ver.

Me? I will build a mac based computer next time. I am finished with windows.

Fun under the Sun!

Ate some food and threw the football around.
It was a good time!

So yeah..
Tim and Yumie and I enjoyed some BBQ and a little tossing of the football.

And if you have never heard it I suggest listening to "The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau - (Mehameha) White Sandy Beach". I prefer it to the live IZ version. It is definitely my favorite Hawaiian song. Makes you feel like your on a beach in Hawaii.

Livin' Yanai style **sweat**

Slippin (on sweat) into the major holiday week in Japan. All the classes are doing great and I have decided to REALLY jump a couple levels with 2 classes.

Imagine we are at step 5 and we go right to 7 and through pressure and sheer will we get there in one highly motivated piece. So after 3 months of struggling they will have a collective "wakata" moment...after which I tell them that they are a full 4 years or more "level wise" ahead of their peers. I have done it before and it does wonders for the confidence.

Because of the way I teach we really don't "skip" anything it's more of a intensity of expectation thing.

The mind of a child/kid/etc. is so strong it can do most anything it "believes" it can. It takes a certain type of class though...and I happen to have 2 on Saturday that fit the mold.

O.K. means O.K.

Chiharu's class is doing great. By April they will be studying J.H. lessons. The youngest is 8. So yeah...they're doin great!

In other news...

I told all the J.H./H.S. kids to bring in a clear folder so we could start the new lesson. Apparently they missunderstood the meaning of "O.K." and thought it was some meaningless generic response. Oh no no no!
You and your word cannot be seperated. If one has no value then the other has no value.
I always give them time to ask questions and be clear with what is expected. I lit into them good today so I don't expect any repeats. All great kids but they are still learning.....no doubt!

Um..on second thought...no thank you!

I will not get into detail except to say that I no longer associate with this group. I am a conversation teacher and I do not have anytime for anyone who suppresses my freedom of speech. It's wrong....it's always wrong.

I can't imagine telling my students they could not discuss certain topics....it's bizzare.
Grow-up and open your minds. And while your at it spring for a free blog or website with a forum and become a member of the 21st century.

The only thing worse than the sleep inducing "grammar talk" was having to read it in my e-mail box?? Whats with that?

As an old NBC kids commercial that ran in the early 80's said:

"Knowledge is power. The more you know, the further you go!"

Now you know.

Ready to go... "POP Culture" 101

I asked all "advanced" J.H./H.S. students to bring me a 100 yen clear type folder so we could start something new.

I will start teaching "current" pop/media icons with pics ( via. google image search ) and bios ( via. a good site I found) and we will start on it this week. I chose Beyonce for the first one because she is familiar to them and she is definitely "current" .

I wanted to use 2pac but explaining about a rapper who was persecuted by the media and assassinated by rivals will have to wait a bit...maybe he will be #4 or 5 ?

Saturdays "Skeleton Crew"

It's not even close!
August is the month with the worst attendance. The whole program grinds to a near halt before shifting into high gear in September. It does give me time to prepare but I look forward to full classes in September.

Meanwhile...

I'm lucky I grew up in America!! The children's ( especially J.H. and H.S. students ) summer "vacation" is not really a "vacation" at all. They are VERY busy. I used to wake up at 11:00am and eat cereal for lunch before playing baseball or riding my Honda in the woods. Some of my best memories are from my summer vacations. I think these kids are too busy.

Just an observation/opinion.

Level-Up!!

They have officially had their last handwriting assignment as homework. They will now get their share of writing in the class as I teach them new vocabulary to put in their notebooks.

I hated grammar in school so I spend as little time as I have to on it in my school.
Once they learn how to write capital and lower case letters we wrap it up. They are happy and I'm happy. Now I expect no problems and a smooth pace when it comes to copying what I tell them into their notebooks.

Top 10 for August

This is the list for August.

With the best class (minus Hinano) holding the list.

Asuka moves up (she should be #1 or #2) Yuki gets on the list for the first time. She is a "blue collar student". She never surprises but she never disappoints either! She keeps truckin' along and never gives me reason to stress ( a.k.a - doing what she's supposed to do). For a 9yr old she has skills.

I think I'll have another big BBQ this month.

Will post any details as I think of them.

If the header on this blog says "CHRIS" only you need to re-load the page. It should say "Chris's English School". I have a 24" Dell and this blog is formated for monitors at least 1024 wide.
