Saturday wins again !!

Saturday is without a doubt the best day of the week. ALL the kids are smart and easy to teach. It is no coincidence that there are no adults today. Chikako's class is about to move up in difficulty and Tomoe and Kaori just had their best class ever.

Yuko will still be #1 next month but Kanuka is now #2 and doing great. Chikako moves from #10 to #8 and Saki and Honoka are new on the list. ( a full list in the next post ). The BIG BBQ birthday beach party is coming very soon and I can't wait!! Wooo Hooo!!!

The "Old Skool" internet.

I made a few tweaks with the lesson structure a few months back and it's bearing fruit. Instead of making phonics/reading a part of a beginners lesson...I made it a BIG part and made a mad push to get them reading as quick as possible. Now they are getting busy with the dictionaries and I could not be more thrilled. Its like an O.G. Internet in that it opens a whole new world to them and their ability to communicate has made serious leaps.

I don't like them mumbling in Japanese or looking at their hands or otherwise struggling. They can just say "wait please" and bust out the book and ask/tell me what they want to say in perfect English. I love it....they love it...

It's a win/win

3 Birthdays Cheeseburger action!!!

Well, 3 girls in one of my best classes have Birthdays in June. So of course that means cheeseburgers must be consumed. My staunch belief that every kid loves cheeseburgers seems to hold water. The smiles are the proof. The school is rockin' and I'm having a blast. I look forward to next week and have welcomed 2 new students to the fold....welcome!!

That was fast!!

Man, it's Friday already? The weeks are flying by! All classes are getting stronger and all lessons are moving ahead of plans.

On another note...

Can I get some more sunny days or what? I'm prayin' we don't have a repeat of last years 5 month rainy season (KNOCKS ON WOOD).

Chikako gets seat #1 & Chinami kills 99 Zombies!!

Well Chikako now has 1st position (in her class). In my School students are seated so that the best student is on the far left with #2 being second from left etc etc..

This is so when I ask my questions the best student catches first and the last student has the most time to watch, listen, and prepare. It has worked excellent for the last 3 years. Chikako was #3....then she was #2 and now she takes the BIG seat and she is the youngest in her class!! I am very happy that she tries so hard.

In other news....

Chinami killed 99 zombies!! she is my official zombie slayer!!

4:00 saves the day

This class (4:30) is so fun It can totally save my day. 5 of the 6 girls could be moved into other classes and would become the leaders of their new classes cuz their personality's are so strong. I am so enjoying the growth of this class. The bottom pic is Miyuka and Soyoka (sisters). Miyuka is a superstar swimmer and she and her sister are getting very good at English. /report

9>>>>8 lucky!!

Well I had 9 classes with one private cancel making it 8 classes today. Lucky for me cuz I was running on fumes near the end. I saw a student (J.H.) throw the middle finger today as a joke and I used the opportunity to teach them that its something not to point in the wrong direction.....unless they want a beating?? They don't so it was a valuable bit of info to pass along to them. After that I taught them the long distance version and took a pic. /report

A new week...

Another week has started and here's a few pics from day 1. Notice the kids in the 3rd pic. They are trying very hard to smile but they are a bit too scared to make it believable. When students first join my school there is a period of adjustment when the LAW is being laid down. If they don't bring their "A" game I'm gonna light them up!! but if they are trying their best....well then it's all cherry!!

These boys are gettin' lit up a bit right now but they are gettin' the hang of things. Kenji (bottom pic far left) is REAL good and I'm lucky to catch him as a new student. /report

Saturday, June 9, 2007!!

Well another week is in the books, and it was the best week in the schools short history!! ALL the classes are moving ahead of schedule and several are moving into a straight conversation type class at the same time. Today's classes had a bit of writing in their notebooks ( I HATE GRAMMAR ) but writing questions down so they can ask me later is very important so it cannot be avoided.....oh well.
Saki was alone today but I could focus on her and see her improvement clearly so it was a good thing for her and me.

On another note..
Some students/classes pictures do not appear on my blog because they have asked me not too?? So if you don't see someone?...that's why. ( party pics capture everyone so you might find them in there.

Future stars!

This is one of those classes that will be great NEXT year. They are very bright and have tons of I just have to push like hell to get them to a level where we are having a true conversation type class. I can see the future....and with this class the future looks good!!

The top 10 class 6/07

This is an awesome class that is getting funner and funner to teach! They are 8-11 and reading, writing (sans the odd grammatical error) is really good. Honoka (far left) is only 8 and she will be a top 10'er soon and Chiharu (second from left) is #9 on the top 10 individual list.Yuki is the second girl from the right and Hinano who is half cut out of the pic (sorry Hinano!) is on the far right. Great kids = Great class = Very happy teacher!!!

A "Wakata" moment.

This is Takuma and Honoka they are 8 and 9? (Shun is absent). And they have just figured out how to read and are now ( with the help of their dictionaries) telling me all about their days!! So the class has officially moved to a true conversation class. It's one of those moments to feel proud as a teacher.

New top 10!!

The new "Top Ten" and Yuko is still #1. Saki almost made it this time and if she keeps improving she will definitely be on it next month. Chikako is new to the list and I am very happy with her improvement. She is an excellent student!
I should have done this a lot sooner. The kids are motivated to get on the list and by making it a age v.s. ability thing it gives everyone a fair shot. I find myself paying even more attention to individual ability and improvement to make sure the list is always an accurate one so in that sense it helps me as well.

Friday Girls

This is becoming one of my best classes. Kanuka is a very very smart girl with an excellent command of English. The other 2 girls are catching up quickly. They are studying an adult lesson with the only difference being I move just a bit slower than with adults.
